What is Social Networking?A social network is an online community created as a place for individuals with common interests to build new relationships. These online services provide simple tools for finding, sharing, and interacting with like-minded people to generate collaborative opportunities. Social networking websites are expanding rapidly as they become a new part of life in strengthening and building new relationships. The Family Pursuit Genealogy Social NetworkAs social networking websites have expanded to cover networking among friends and family, Family Pursuit has reached out to develop a solid genealogy social networking platform allowing genealogists to network and collaborate together to further their research efforts. Our genealogy social network is specifically created to easily find other genealogy researchers who are knowledgeable about the ancestors you are interested in. This is a dramatic change from most systems that simply list every user related to an ancestor based on their family tree. Most of these users have limited knowledge about the ancestor of interest, making it very difficult to sift through thousands of users in an attempt to find someone who can help. Utilizing the change log from our genealogy wiki, our genealogy social network displays in one screen each user that has contributed to an ancestor and the ways in which they have contributed. This display of collaborators simplifies the process of connecting and networking with other genealogists by pinpointing those who have actively researched each ancestor. Our genealogy social network also provides multiple ways for contacting and interacting with other genealogy researchers. Users can easily discuss facts and timelines, and propose new theories by using our genealogy message boards. Each ancestor profile within our Community Tree includes a genealogy message board specifically created for that ancestor. We have also developed a private messaging system that allows users to send messages back and forth and expand these conversations by inviting other users. As users network and begin to build new relationships with distant relatives, we have built new and exciting research tools for coordinating genealogy research efforts. These tools allow users to organize genealogy research around a specific subject or goal. Tasks can be created for accomplishing your research project objectives. Within each task, users can keep a research log of the entire research process. Because Family Pursuit is an online family tree, these tasks and research logs can be accessed from any computer that has an Internet connection. |
