The theory to Mary's last name |
| 2009-10-28 06:51:33 - Dawn Graddick I have a theory to Daniel's wife, Mary's last name. In most cases the first child is named after the husband's side of the family. The second child then after the mother's.
The Graddick's have a strong tradition of putting the mother's maiden name in with the second son. I always thought Reddick was just a nasty joke to pull on the poor guy. Then I researched the name Reddick/Riddick and found it a last name from the Carolina's. It also has Native heritage also and South Carolina was part of the Cherokee's land during the time the Graddick/Gradick/Gredig arrived and lived there.
If Mary listed her name though she would have had to be listed on the Baker Roll, Dawes Roll, The Reservation Roll, Emigration Roll, Armstrong Roll, Mullay Roll, Chapman Roll, Siler Roll, Act of Congress Roll , Drennen Roll, Swetland Roll or Hester Roll to name but a few. This would also mean she would not be allowed to live with her husband and children.
So if Mary Reddick/Riddick was Native her name was hidden to keep her from being sent to a reservation. I am currently doing a deep research into her background as the idea of this seems very plausible and would confirm her just showing up name wise on census's.
Any input or ideas are more than welcome. |
